Choosing The Right Name For Your Horse

Naming your new baby foal is fun, but it can be difficult at times. I have had many babies throughout the years and I have found out that the best way to go about naming your new baby is to let the baby name him or her self. Here are a few tips and tricks I've learned along the way.

Babies are so adorable when they're born and it's so easy to want to name them Sweetie Pie, Precious and Cutie, but when Precious becomes a 15 hand gelding, the name just doesn't quite fit anymore. Remember to take into consideration that your horse will have his or her name for a long time so you'll want something that will fit into adulthood.

We all want to name the baby as soon as it pops out and when you see a new baby that belongs to someone else, the first thing you always say is, "Oh, he's so cute! What's his name?" I have learned though, that the best thing to do is to wait a few months and let the baby choose his own name. As your baby grows and experiences new things, he or she will develop their own personality and traits. This is when it's fun to name them. For instance, a friend of mine had a little black filly and when she was young everything just threw her into a little fit. Her name is Tizzy. Another thing to consider is that some horses will change colors as they get older. Case in point, that same friend had a black appaloosa cross. When she was born, she was black with just a couple small white spots on her butt. As she got older, she got more and more of those little white spots. She became Sprinkles.

As hard as it is to wait to name your new baby, it will be worth it in the long run. Wait a little while to see what kind of personality your baby has and what color she will turn out to be. You will be more satisfied with your new name when it actually matches the horse and it's a whole lot easier when you let the baby choose his or her own name.
